Transportation

Transportation of radioactive materials is necessary when the material is produced or used at a site different from where it is processed, stored or disposed. Materials are routinely transported in many countries by road, rail, ship and airplane.

The transportation regulations in most countries are based on various versions of the IAEA "Regulations on the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials". These regulations stipulate the type of packaging that must be used, the labelling of the package, allowable modes of transport, etc. Generally, the higher the hazard associated with the material, the more stringent the transportation requirements (e.g. transportation packages must be able to withstand conditions such as drop tests from various heights, fire tests, leak test, immersion tests, etc. without releasing the radioactive contents.) "Conventional" transportation regulations also apply in many cases (such as road weight limits).
