Government & regulatory agencies
Governments play numerous roles in nuclear energy and radioactive waste
management. On one hand, they may be active promoters of nuclear energy
in many countries. On the other hand, they are also the regulators of
things nuclear. This dual role often leads to complex relationships
and overlaps between various government departments or ministries. The
situation can become even more complicated when several government agencies
claim jurisdiction over different (or sometimes the same) aspects. To
complete the picture, you often have to add in different levels of
government (e.g. local, regional, state, and national). An important
point to remember is that the regulatory framework and laws are different in
each country.
